Happy reading:)
The room was suffocatingly quiet.
I sat stiffly in the chair, my back straight my hands resting on my thighs in perfect military posture. It was instinct training drilled into my bones. But inside I was burning. Seething.
Across from me, he was lounged like this was just another business deal. One arm. Draped lazily over the chair, legs stretched out, his entire demeanor effortless . Relaxed . Amused.
I hated that about him the way he could command a room without lifting a damn finger.
"This is not happening." My voice was sharp and controlled.
He tilted his head, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Oh but it is, Captain."
My fingers curled into fists. "Marriage? That's your solution?"
He exhaled slowly as if he were speaking to a child throwing tantrums. "You're soldier. You know how the game work." His voice was calm but there was stell underneath. "Right now, the government wants your head. Every intelligence agency is tracking your movements." He lowered slightly, his voice dropping lowering. "If you were civilian, you would have died."
The truth is his words sat heavy in my chest.
I had been tied up to this bastard. The world believed I have leaked classify information, comprising national security. And now I was hunted.
No trial. No change to price my innocence.
No one cared.
No one except him.
But this wasn't kindness. He didnt deal in kindness.
My jaw clenched. "And let me guess marrying you suddenly make all my problems disappear?"
He smirked. "Not all. Just the ones that can kill you."
My pulse pounded but I kept my face blank.
I knew what this meant. Marriage would tie me to him make me legally untouchable. A wife couldn't be forced to testify against her husband. It would shield me from government's gaze keeping me alive.
But it also meant that I would be his.
I hated that he was the only way out. Hated that he knows it. I inhaled sharply. "And what do you get out of this?"
He leaned back completely at ease. A king dictating terms of his prisoner.
"You know what I do, captain." His tone was almost amused. "The government keeps trying to find ways to bury me, to shut down my operation. But with decorated military officer as my wife?" His lips curled. "Let's just say it makes things... inconvenient for them."
My stomach twisted.
So that was it. He wanted protection too.
A soldier and a criminal bound by law. Both using each other to survive.
My hands twitch aching to grab around his throat. "I should kill you for this."
He chuckled. "You can try that, Captain."
My nails dug into my palms. "And if I say no?"
His expression didn't change but something in the air shifted, very quiet and colder.
"Then you run, you hide and you wait for them to find you." A quiet death sentence. "And they will find you."
A shiver crawled down my spine.
I knew it, he knew it.
The government's eyes was on me. The system I had dedicated my life to had me thrown to the wolves. I had no one.
Except him.
He was giving me a way out but at a price.
My freedom for my survival. My name for his power.
I exhaled shakily staring at the man who was about to become husband. "ONE YEAR." I said finally, my voice hollow. "After that I walk away."
All he said was, "Fine."
